Are Chiropractors real Doctors?

  • Absolutely. A Doctor of Chiropractic (D.C) is a post doctorate graduate, the same as a Doctor of Medicine (M.D), or Doctor of Dentistry (D.D.S). The degree is obtained after a pre-requisite course of study in undergraduate classes are completed. Some states require a four-year bachelor degree before the candidate becomes eligible for their Chiropractic license. The Chiropractic school curriculum is very similar to that of medical and dental school, with a greater emphasis on anatomy, physiology, and Chiropractic care. Chiropractors must pass individual State certification and National certification in order to practice & are required to attend continuing education courses yearly.

What is a Subluxation?

  • A condition in which a spinal bone has misaligned with the one above, the one below or both: occluding an opening: impinging a nerve and interfering with the normal transmission of mental impulses between the brain and tissue cells of the body. The subluxation being a small local sprain produces inflammation as does any lesion. Swelling or local edema (pooling of extra-cellular fluid to the injury site in order to protect the area from further injury) always accompanies inflammation.

Dr. Sharpless, a researcher at the University of Colorado, constructed an apparatus to add small increments of pressure to living nerve tissue as it emerges from the spine. His experiments found that only 45 mm Hg pressure (about the weight of a quarter) maintained for several minutes on the nerve root killed the function the nerve 60%. University of Colorado research has also shown that this amount of pressure maintained for 1 to 3 hours causes many of the nerve fibers in the nerve root to rupture, producing toxins or poisons which spreads to the surrounding tissues. This leads to muscle soreness. Delicate muscle fibers attached to the involved bone creates a taut/stretched muscle fiber. This results into a muscular spasm, which is a reflex mechanism that the body undergoes to protect fibers from damage. Significant trauma will actually tear muscle fibers which results in scar tissue formation which will prevent the body from healing in the proper position, usually the direction that the trauma occurred, such as whiplash injury resulting in forward head posture or a fall down resulting in a high hip.

What causes Subluxation?

  • Any stress or trauma to the body can produce a subluxation (misalignment) such as accidents, slip and falls, poor posture, stressful sleeping poistions, sudden twist, sports impact, poor lifting habits, chronic anxiety, emotional stress, poor telephone habits, poor weight lifting techiniques, difficult child birth, whip lash injuries, and sudden shock

What is an Adjustment?

  • Specific spinal adjustments allow structural stability by restoring proper alignment of a misaligned vertabre. This will take pressure off the nerves and relieve muscle spasm, allowing your body to heal. Many Chiropractic techniques will deliver an adjustment to meet your threshold either with a hands on manual adjustment, or an instrument controlled low force technique.

What does an adjustment feel like?

  • Each person's physiological threshold is different, therefore each patient's body responds to an adjustment differently. Most patients find chiropractic care relieving. Although, a small percentage may feel a mild level of discomfort within the first couple of visits. This is normal due to the amount of tissue and/or nerve damage that is associated with spinal misalignment derived from neck or back pain. After the body begins to heal properly through chiropractic care, the end result outweighs the initial temporary levels of discomfort. We take pride in making your care an enjoyable and comfortable experience.

How many times will I have to be treated?

  • Treatment time varies with each individual patient. Some factors to consider are your condition, degree of health, history of trauma, activities of daily living and what you want to obtain from your care. Studies show most patients show favorable results in an average of 12 treatments. Some complicated cases, such as accident and trauma victims may take longer to treat and rehabilitate.

Is Chiropractic safe for pregnant women?

  • Yes. The birthing process can be very difficult on the mother's biomechanical structure. Many women experience back and groin pain for the first time during pregnancy and this can be cared for in a safe and drug free manner without harm to the mother or unborn child. Getting proper alignment will remove nerve interference from the mother allowing optimal fetal development. As a mother herself, Dr. Tanya also finds it important to share vital information on healthy maternal dieting, exercises and nutritional support.

Can Chiropractic benefit children?

  • Yes. Children can experience relief from the same problems that affect adults. The activity level of children results in falls and minor injuries which make them excellent candidates for Chiropractic care. More importantly, detecting spinal misalignment early can prevent chronic adolescent problems such as scoliosis (abnormal curvatures of the spine causing postural distortions), headaches, neck or back pain. If subluxations are not addressed early the child will experience symptoms in the future as a result of years of biomechanical degeneration that could have been prevented though chiropractic care.

Our staff has a caring heart for children. Even our staff's children get spinal adjustments and we see many little ones on a daily basis. We makes sure that each visit is fun and inviting for them.

Will my insurance cover Chiropractic care?

  • Most insurance companies do cover Chiropractic care. Each policy is different, and our staff will be happy to pre-verify and inform you of your benefits.

Will I need X-Rays?

  • Your chiropractor will be able to determine if x-rays are necessary based on the information derived from the consultation and examination. X-rays allow the doctor to visualize the patient's spine and joints to determine a proper course of treatment. They also enable them to make a referral to another type of provider if necessary, so that the patient may receive the best care possible. The doctor will review the films with you if x-rays are recommended.

What types of conditions are improved by Chiropractic care?

  • Poor posture due to a past trauma or repetitive occupational stress can lead to spinal misalignments that compromise the body, immune system or cause dysfunction. These subluxations (spinal misalignment) cause strain on the nerves, ligaments, joints and/or disc leading to many problems. Safe chiropractic spinal adjustments can address many of the following:
neck pain stiff neck disc herniation
spinal stenosis buldging disc pinched nerve
back problems muscle pain joint pain
migraine lumbar pain pain in the shoulder
back ache pain in the spine herniated disc
back pain pregnancy and pain pregnancy symptoms
pelvic pain tension headache mid back pain
low back pain hip pain backpain
pain in neck allergies auto accident
bed wetting scoliosis ear infections
